چکیده

A linear dose response to furosemide in terms of attenuation of the exercise-induced pulmonary capillary hypertension does not exist in Thoroughbred horses. Furosemide 2.0 mg/kg IV given 4 h before exercise further significantly ( p , 0.05) attenuates the exercise-induced pulmonary capillary hypertension compared with the 250-mg dose routinely used at Illinois racetracks. Pulmonary vascular pressures of exercising thoroughbred horses with and without endoscopic evidence of EIPH.

Exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) is a common occurrence in racehorses. The objective of this study was to compare pulmonary vascular pressures of healthy Thoroughbred horses with and without postexertion endoscopically detectable fresh blood in the trachea. The nasopharynx, larynx, and trachea (down to the carina) of horses were examined weekly with an endoscope 55-60 min postexerti...

Effect of the Sequential Administration of Two Doses of Furosemide on Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension in Thoroughbred Horses

Compared with a single 250-mg dose of furosemide given intravenously 4 h prior to exercise, the administration of two sequential intravenous doses of furosemide (4 and 2 h prior to exercise) does not cause further attenuation of exercise-induced pulmonary capillary hypertension in Thoroughbred horses exercising at their maximal heart rate. Therefore, the sequential administration of two doses o...

Efficacy of furosemide for prevention of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage in Thoroughbred racehorses.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy of furosemide for prevention of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) in Thoroughbred racehorses under typical racing conditions. DESIGN Randomized, placebo-controlled, blinded, crossover field trial. ANIMALS 167 Thoroughbred racehorses. PROCEDURES Horses were allocated to race fields of 9 to 16 horses each and raced twice, 1 week apart, with each...

Association between exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage and performance in Thoroughbred racehorses.

OBJECTIVE To determine whether exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) was associated with racing performance inThoroughbred horses not medicated with furosemide and not using nasal dilator strips. DESIGN Observational cross-sectional study. ANIMALS 744 two- to 10-year-old Thoroughbred horses racing in Melbourne, Australia. PROCEDURE Horses were enrolled prior to racing, and a trache...

Efficacy of nasal strip and furosemide in mitigating EIPH in Thoroughbred horses.

The purpose of this investigation was to study the effects of an equine nasal strip (NS), furosemide (Fur), and a combination of both (NS + Fur) on exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) at speeds corresponding to near-maximal effort. Five Thoroughbreds (526 +/- 25 kg) were run on a flat treadmill from 7 to 14 m/s in 1 m x s(-1) x min(-)1 increments every 2 wk (treatment order randomized)...
